Exploring the Culture of Community at Vermont Tech

Based on the positive experience of the FY17 initiatives exploring Gender Issues, President Moulton charged a group of committees to explore “community” for the College’s FY18 initiatives. In addition to faculty and staff participation, President Moulton is encouraging students to join the initiative by volunteering for committees, attending events and providing feedback. The committees for this year include two returning from the previous year and two new ones formed for the purpose of promoting volunteerism and preventing sexual violence.

To help the committees develop their ideas and prioritize their work, President Moulton has identified keys to her vision for the Vermont Tech’s culture:

  • An inclusive community that respects those that look, love, worship, live differently than you do.
  • A community that is not just tolerant, but respectful and welcoming of diversity.
  • A recognition that we live in a “world community” that needs to better understand each other to live respectfully and peacefully with each other.
  • An environment that is safe for all where everyone feels respected.
  • Realizing you do not need to agree with someone to respect them.  You can disagree without being disagreeable.
  • Debate is different than being disagreeable.
  • A little kindness goes a long way to building functional relationships.  “Treat others as you would have them treat you!”

President Moulton supports an inclusive community to increase student and employee satisfaction.
